I did not have a chance to respond until now. I should have said 'receiver' instead of 'TV'. You have probably already tried this, but be sure the player is set to 'Bitstream-reencode', since you are using the optical connection to your receiver. Then, see if the receiver tells you what surround mode it is in. It should be in DTS mode. This is assuming your receiver can decode DTS. If it cannot, you may need to set the player to 'bitstream-audiophile' mode for Dolby discs and 'PCM' (losing the surround tracks) for DTS discs until you upgrade your sound system. I do not know what 'auto-surround' is, so try to manually change the receiver into Dolby Digital and/or DTS modes. Also, see the notes on pages 32-34 of the player's manual regarding sound output formats.
Last, the TV's HDMI input itself may be causing the problem. Quite possibly, the TV cannot accept a DTS signal input, so the player will change the output format of the HDMI sound-and then also the optical output-to whatever the TV can accept. The test for this problem would be to try using the component output into the TV (and disconnect the HDMI cable) and see if your sound changes.

Hi. I got the BD-5500C from Costco the other day. The player seems great and Serviio works well streaming to it. This is the first time I tried Pandora and it is very cool.
I'm on a trial with Netflix and had no problems streaming a movie over the last couple days. However, when I went to the Blockbuster area and selected 'preview' the AV sync was off for every movie I tried. Have you guys tried to stream Blockbuster movies? If so, what was your experience AV sync wise? I can't really imagine paying for it anyway.
I don't understand why Netflix includes it in their subscription price and Blockbuster doesn't. I happen to subscribe to Blockbuster Online and it's a big disappointment that their VOD is extra. OTOH, it's too bad that most of the Netflix streaming movies don't include CC which is important because my wife is hearing impaired. Does the Blockbuster VOD include CC? I guess we'll connect the wireless headphones to it which could help.

I just bought this unit and set it up. I have an older Sony 4:3 TV with no HDMI, only component video. I have the Samsung player set to play on a 4:3 TV. When I play DVDs the aspect ratio plays fine. But when I play BDs the picture is squished. I have to change the TV setting (on the player) to 16:9 for some reason. When I do the picture looks great by the way (even at 1080i). But I shouldnt have to keep changing the settings back and forth between playing DVDs and BDs, should I?
Edit: I also do not have the unit wired to the internet yet and won't be able to do it for some time.

That must be one of those old 'HD ready' CRT sets? BD for the time being will display at 1080 over component DVDs will just output at 480p and that is why the output changes. You can get an HDMI to component converter like the HDFury and the player will upscale the DVDs to 1080 too.

My player still plays both region 4 and 1 since I upgraded the firmware yesterday. I have not retried the hack as I don't need to.

I have some random issues with this player after two weeks of using it.
    1. If I leave a DVD in the player, turn it off, turn it on and the disc restarts, 1 in 3 times it will say MENU on the front of the unit but nothing on the screen. Nothing on the remote, including Eject, will respond. Only the power off/on button. Once turned back on I might get lucky and the disc will play (from the beginning).
    2. Audio of all AVI and MKV lags by a few milliseconds. This is via streaming and on DVD-R. I have tried dozens of files. It's noticeable and annoying but not disasterous - my Popcorn Hour connected to the same TV does not have this issue though.
    3. I just put a R4 disc in and skipped ahead a few chapters and the audio was out of sync by at least a whole second. Skipping around chapters did not solve it neither did pause/unpause. I had to stop the disc then Play to resume for everything to be fine.
I have the BD-C5500 connected directly to my Samsung Series 5 32' LCD by a single HDMI cable.
I have performed the region free remote hack to region 9 to enable playback of any DVD.
    Any ideas?

Some way back in thread there were a few of us wondering why the players speedtest often reported less than 2Mbps when from our PC's we would see much higher speeds.
Well someone over posting in Samsung CNET forum posted this.
    Quote:

After two weeks of testing in our lab and at my home, I have learned much about how Samsung streams video. All tests were done via the Ethernet connection and the latest software version which the boxes automatically downloaded.
First, the speed test has nothing to do with the amount of bandwidth the BD-C5500 or BD-C6500 boxes consume. The speed test actually connects to Samsung in Korea. Even though I had a dedicated 100mb (yep) connection to a national tier 3 provider, my units would never register more than 1.9 mbs, and often saw less than 1mb. Because the test is headed to Korea, it shows true throughput to somewhere you are never going to stream from. Samsung could easily change the test server to someplace in the U.S. and completely remove this issue from the table.
Second, the boxes will consume all available bandwidth up to about 10mb. I had both boxes watching the same HD movie and had one peak of 20mb, average was about 16 for two boxes.
Third, minimum speed to watch HD movies is 4.3 mb per box. Vudu is more forgiving down to about 3.8mb. Netflix will reduce the video quality until the movie looks like a bad VHS tape. Minimum speed to watch an SD movie is 1.5 mb. Remember.. if your kid is watching YouTube on the PC while you are watching Netflix, it reduces the amount of speed or bandwidth you have available. This may explain why some of you have mentioned HD works sometimes but not all the time.
Fourth, Netflix has HD movies for streaming, but you have to hunt for them. Check the FAQ's on their website. If you request an HD movie and you have at least 4.3mb, you will see the bars light up clear to HD! It is easy to accidentally place an SD movie in your queue and think it was supposed to be HD. Vudu makes it real easy to rent HD or SD and know what your are getting.
NOTE: I had to force the configuration on either Samsung device to 1080p or 1080i before it actually would stream HD, get all the bars and display true HD quality. The 'Auto-sense' gizmo seemed to be stuck on SD quality.
Fifth, Every time the box powers up it phones home.. to Korea which is why it appears to be slow to respond to InternetTV requests. It takes about 4 minutes before it has finished communicating with the mother ship, then things speed up.
Sixth, Your streaming enjoyment is at the mercy of your upstream providers. Your cable company or local ISP may actually be delivering the 20 megs you are paying for, but NetFlix uses Akemi as their main video server. I noticed packet issues when Akemi was busy that reduced my video consumption rate. (Although this never affect the quality during our tests)
Finally, I put the Samsung boxes head to head with Roku and Vudu. The bandwidth consumption rates between all boxes were almost identical, video quality was also identical.
My conclusion on the two Samsung devices I purchased is: They work as good as the Roku or Vudu boxes for streaming video. Samsung should move the speed test to the same county the device is located in and also move the mother ship communications. I have preformed exhaustive tests on the BD-C5500 and BD-C6500 and find no fault or issue on the performance of either device.
PS I don't work for Samsung

Thanks for that info. The other night I was trying to finish a movie that said it was HD and the stream would only show 4 good bars and the output looked like a YouTube video. Since it was a little after 8PM I figured Netflix was suffering too much demand to give me the HD stream so I went back after 10 PM and got the HD stream. As for my broadband service after the YouTube quality stream I ran a speed test and it showed my usual 5 mbps plus on my 6 mbps service. I think Netflix is experiencing rapid growth in streaming and having trouble keeping up with it server wise.
It looks to me they do the reduction with software as I can't imagine them buying a bunch of realtime encoding hardware (very expensive) to do it for each customer. It looked about the quality if you to an HD transport stream and sent it out VLC recoded realtime in SD. Having uploaded a 1080p file to YouTube recently I note they recode everything including the 1080p version and have 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p and 1080p all in h.264. But I thought even the 240p which they seemed to stream on the 5500 looked better than the low bitrate Netflix stream. I would think that Netflix would do about the same thing as YouTube does for encoding and just select the stream they can serve at the moment rather than recoding.
BTW, anyone notice if they gotten an HD movie that contrary to Netflix stereo only claims sound like they were in 5.1?

Does anyone know how to get the Rovi TV Listings to display my proper time? It's not in the settings of that application and the player's time settings seem to be correct. For example at 7:05 PM it was showing 12:05 AM.
Also there's no way to go to specific channel, correct? You need to hit page down a thousand times to get to the 600s. I did the 'My TV' set up which took way too long to select 10 favorite channels. Then I went into the settings to check if there was a time setting there, which reset the 'My TV' configuration. As I said, I never found a time setting.

Hi, just recvd the BD C5500 for my birthday. (it will replace a Denon DVD-557.)
I played a borrowed BD - awesome. I previewed a DVD and it seemed ok.
Have not tried audio capabilty yet as I used COAX for the audio out from the denon. I'll pick up an optical cable as soon as I can.
I am interested in wireless connectivity. Has anyone done this yet? No answers to the couple queries on the forum.
Samsung website advises to buy WIS09ABGN or WIS10ABGN. When I continue to the order page, it advises that the parts are replaced by AK96-01194A. Has anyone bought this?
Would like to get a warm, fuzzy before making the purchase.
    Many thanks!

Anyone have a good link to the manual for this unit?
I've downloaded the ones at this support link but they won't open in Acrobat for me and let me read past the first several pages.
    http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/t..il&tab=support
I need to see page 30 or so, to learn whether this player allows for native pass through of video resolutions. That is, if a source is 720p, I like to see it that way, not scaled in the player, and if the source is 1080p, I like to see it that way, etc. (I have an external scaling solution.)
I know the Oppo does this but I need a player with Vudu and Netflix that can do it -- and the Oppo does neither of those services.

Awesome thanks. That is the page.
Unfortunately like most players it looks like this one doesnt have a 'native' mode that just outputs via hdmi the same resolution as the source material.

Yes it does. Push 'Full Screen'-button at the remote control. There is 3 options: mode1, mode2 and original. Original shows the same resolution as the source material.

I checked Internet apps last night and saw that CinemaNow available as an app so installed it. Looks like the prices are pretty comparable to Vudu. They also offer HD probably 720p.

It seemed buggy. It 'found' one title I searched for with autocomplete feature. After selecting it, I got into a blank screen. The only responsive action at that point was to exit the app.

I'm not sure when you would need to enter the PIN. I would imagine that if you select a movie to purchase that it would prompt you. However, it lets you browse their selection and search for titles prior to that. Specifically, I entered 'Trans' and autocomplete found Transformers and Transformers Season 1. Try selecting Transformers Season 1 and see if you get a blank screen screen. I would imagine if it was truly in their library, information regarding the selection would appear. Maybe it's not really there but it is still in their database. Just guessing.
Other titles that aren't in their database don't show up which is to be expected, of course. 'The Thin Red Line' was one search term I entered that came up with no results. The 'Transformers Season 1' selection should then give you some information, not a black screen that you need to back out of.
